Steven H. Krein is the CEO and Co-founder of StartUp Health, which is organizing and supporting a global army of Health Transformers on a 25 year mission to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in the world. StartUp Health has the world’s largest digital health portfolio at more than 175 companies spanning 5 continents, 16 countries and 70 cities.

Prior to StartUp Health, Steven cofounded and led several technology companies including OrganizedWisdom, Promotions.com and Webstakes, a global online advertising, direct marketing, and technology company, which he took public on Nasdaq and grew to a $500M market cap before it was acquired by iVillage in 2002. Steven began his online career with Law Journal Extra!, now known as Law.com, the first online legal news and information website.

Steven is a serial entrepreneur, speaker, investor, advisor and entrepreneurial coach. Steven has been a keynote speaker at events hosted by Children’s Hospital Colorado, Cleveland Clinic, Google, Johnson & Johnson, Lake Nona Institute, McKinsey, Slush and Wharton, among others and has been a guest on Bloomberg TV, CNBC, CNN, FOX Business and The Today Show.

Steven received his JD degree from Delaware Law School and BA degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. Steven is a member of YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization) Metro New York Chapter and lives in New York City with his wife and three daughters.

Unity Stoakes is on a mission to reinvent health and wellness by leveraging the power of networked entrepreneurs, innovation, technology, data, design, collaboration and community. Unity is the co-founder and president of StartUp Health, which is organizing and supporting a global army of Health Transformers. With more than 350 Healthcare Transformers and 170 companies, StartUp Health spans more than a dozen countries and 60 cities.

Unity has been a technology entrepreneur since the mid-nineties, previously co-founding OrganizedWisdom and helping build The Privacy Council, Middleberg Interactive and Webstakes.com/Promotions.com, which he helped take public on NASDAQ with his business partner of 20 years, Steven Krein.

Unity is a contributing writer for Forbes, been a guest on Bloomberg TV, CNBC and USA Today and spoken at global health tech events in the US, Brazil, Canada, England, Holland, Italy and Spain. He is also the host of StartUp Health NOW, a weekly web show on the entrepreneurs and changemakers reimagining health.

Unity is a founding member of the Society of Participatory Medicine and on the AARP Innovation @50+ Advisory Board, the SXSW Accelerator Advisory Board and Care Innovations Advisory Board. He received his BA in Communications and Political Science from Boston University. Unity resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Bari serves as the Chief Strategy and Compliance Officer for StartUp Health. Bari has worked with many members of the StartUp Health team for more than a decade. Previously, she served as General Counsel of Promotions.com, Inc., a publicly traded global online marketing and technology company. Prior to working in-house, Bari was a Partner with the Business and Finance Group of Reed Smith Shaw and McClay. L.P., where she regularly counseled early stage companies as well as established publicly-traded enterprises on securities and corporate governance issues as well as general corporate and financing matters.

Bari started her career at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC, where she worked in both the Divisions of Corporation Finance and Enforcement. Bari holds a B.S. degree from the University of Delaware, a JD degree from Delaware Law School and a LLM in Taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Michael Horton leads StartUp Health's financing and accounting efforts. A recent addition to the StartUp Health team, Michael spent the last 15 years in senior finance roles within GE Capital, the financial services unit of General Electric, and was most recently Managing Director of a joint venture between GE Capital and the Abu Dhabi government. Prior to GE Capital, Michael was previously with JER partners, a $2BB real estate opportunity fund, where he held both Controller and CFO roles. Michael holds a BS in Public Accounting from the State University of New York, and is a CPA in both New York and Connecticut.

Howard Krein, MD, PhD
Chief Medical Officer and Board Observer, StartUp Health

Dr. Howard Krein is Chief Medical Officer at StartUp Health, which is organizing and supporting an army of Health Transformers. Dr. Krein acts as a strategic clinical advisor to the world’s largest portfolio of digital health companies and responsible for shaping StartUp Health’s moonshot themes to help improve the health of everyone in the world.

Dr. Krein currently serves as Senior Director of Health Policy & Innovation at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. He also currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and a founding partner and co-director of Jefferson’s Facial Aesthetic and Reconstructive Center.

Dr. Krein is part of an exclusive group of physicians with two doctorates, receiving his M.D. from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Krein completed internships in both Emergency Medicine and General Surgery, a residency in Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and a Fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond Virginia. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Neuroscience from Rutgers University. Dr. Krein lives in Philadelphia, PA.

Polina is the Moonshot Academy Director of StartUp Health and is an extremely passionate advocate for health entrepreneurs. StartUp Health is organizing and supporting a global army of entrepreneurs, or Health Transformers, with the goal of improving the health and wellbeing of everyone in the world. Polina leads the StartUp Health Moonshot Academy, a lifetime program designed to help entrepreneurs succeed at every stage of their business by attracting the team members, customers, and capital needed through structured coaching and reinforcement of the Health Transformer Mindsets.

Prior to joining StartUp Health in 2012, Polina was at Viscogliosi Bros., a merchant bank focused on the orthopedic industry, where she held multiple interim roles within the firm’s portfolio companies. At Centinel Spine, she led M&A deals for the company’s spinal stabilization device portfolio, corporate development and distribution-related operations. She also launched Musculoskeletal Clinical and Regulatory Advisers, a consulting firm for commercializing orthopedic technologies, where she focused on client relations, marketing, and corporate finance.

Polina received her B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

At StartUp Health, Katya focuses on a broad range of activities designed to help Health Transformers build equity value including: leading the StartUp Health Network Team, which is focused on developing relationships with customer and investor stakeholders, building strategic partnerships that unite entrepreneurs with key industry stakeholders (GE, Kaiser, Aurora Health Care, AARP and others), expanding StartUp Health’s global footprint (including StartUp Health Finland), and more. Katya regularly meets with senior leadership across the healthcare industry to help them advance their innovation strategies, and prepare them to work with the best startups in healthcare.

Prior to StartUp Health, Katya worked in the technology industry as a key team member at three financial tech start-ups, helping two of them grow to be acquired by Fortune 500 companies. Her experience includes corporate strategy, strategic partnerships and business development, product management, marketing, and capital raising.

Katya grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, but has resided in New York City for a decade and is therefore finally considered a New Yorker. She lives with her husband, son, and daughter.

Prior to StartUp Health, Alex was a Financial Analyst at HLM Venture Partners, where he analyzed over 40 potential investments and monitored the performance of over 20 portfolio companies in the healthcare industry. Nicole is also an entrepreneur herself. She has a boutique web development company, and she was a partner in an event company that produced large-scale entertainment expos (over 30,000 guests per event). She has previously worked as a front-end developer for a Fortune 500 company and several dot-coms.

Nicole has a B.S. in Animal Science with a minor in Computer Information Systems from Cal Poly Pomona. She lives in Washington state with her husband, a houseful of rescue cats, a giant dog, and a small herd of Arabian horses. She participates in endurance riding and when not exploring the outside world on foot or horseback, she is curled up with a good book.
