How eddii Is Redefining Endocrine Care
StartUp Health community member Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD, CEO & Co-founder of eddii, is building an integrated platform redefining endocrine care. eddii provides clinical care for conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and clinical weight loss. By aggregating real-time data, lab results, and behavioral insights, eddii delivers AI-driven, personalized expert care, and expands access to licensed endocrinologists nationwide through its virtual platform, eddii-Care.
From Daily Diabetes Management to a Nationwide Endocrine Platform
When Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a young adult, her life changed overnight. Managing the condition was complex, exhausting, and often isolating. Instead of accepting the status quo, she founded eddii, which began as a gamified diabetes companion app and has grown into a comprehensive, AI-powered endocrine care platform.
Today, with more than 40,000 app users and 2,000 patients receiving direct care, eddii is tackling one of the most pressing crises in healthcare: the shortage of endocrinologists. With only 9,000 active endocrinologists in the United States and more than 100 million referrals each year, access is limited, wait times stretch for months, and patients often rely on non-specialists for complex treatment.
eddii’s response is eddii-Care, a virtual endocrinology platform that connects patients with licensed endocrinologists at the tap of a button.
The Challenge: Closing the Endocrine Care Gap
Ahmadi is blunt about the scale of the problem. “Eighty percent of people we see have more than one endocrinology condition. They need a specialist,” she explains. Yet access is scarce. Many patients struggle to find an endocrinologist near them, let alone one who takes their insurance.
eddii-Care is designed to change that. Already available for adults in 10 states and for pediatric care in 38 states, the platform is expanding rapidly with a goal of nationwide coverage by Q2 of 2026. Insurance integration is central to the model, making care affordable and accessible for patients who previously faced travel burdens and long delays.
Under the Hood: A Friendly, Data-Driven Companion
At its heart, eddii blends patient engagement with serious clinical depth. The app integrates real-time with devices such as Dexcom and and very soon Abbott CGMs, pulling in 288 blood glucose readings daily for users with diabetes. This real-time data fuels AI-driven insights, supportive nudges, and personalized recommendations.
It is not just numbers and charts. A playful, yet smart, character named eddii lives inside the app, responding to glucose fluctuations, cheering on progress, and turning daily management into a less intimidating, even enjoyable experience. Users can earn hearts, complete educational quizzes, and unlock rewards, which helps keep engagement high.
Clinical impact is already measurable. In a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, use of eddii improved Time in Range for pediatric Type 1 diabetes patients by 5.38%.
What’s Next: Scaling Nationwide and Beyond Diabetes
With partnerships in place with Dexcom and Abbott, and payer deals in motion, including a potential agreement to provide endocrinology care for 350,000 patients through a major Midwest insurer, eddii is positioned to expand from diabetes into the full spectrum of endocrine disorders.
Thyroid disease, weight management, and other hormonal conditions are already supported on the platform. By layering AI to triage cases, summarize labs, and extend endocrinologists’ capacity, eddii is building what Ahmadi calls “your all-in-one endo care solution.”
The company is on track to deliver care to more than 100,000 patients by the end of next year.
A Founder’s Perspective
For Ahmadi, living with diabetes means the company’s guiding principle is deeply personal: the patient comes first. That philosophy led eddii to make the bold decision to become a virtual clinic, despite skepticism.
“I think this is what’s best for the patient,” she says. “That’s how we decide what to build.”
It is also why she remains optimistic about the future. “The way endocrine conditions are managed has changed tremendously. We finally have high-quality data from wearables and lab work that can lead to expert, personalized recommendations. With AI, we can scale specialist care in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago.”
As a longtime member of the StartUp Health community, Ahmadi credits the network of fellow founders and advisors with helping eddii sharpen its focus and expand its reach. “In every way, the T1D Moonshot has exceeded our expectations. The community is truly meaningful. It's really good to bounce around ideas and get one another's thoughts. The amount of exposure we get – whether it's through speakers we have come on board or through the marketing efforts – also has been phenomenal. And I personally always believe that relationships take time to build, especially in healthcare. This has been true of StartUp Health.” The collaboration, shared learnings, and collective energy of the community continue to fuel eddii’s progress toward a world where endocrine care is accessible, engaging, and equitable for all.
