CAREgivers Insight: Empowering the Unsung Heroes of Healthcare

Caregivers are the unsung heroes of the healthcare system, providing essential support to those who need it most—whether they are family members or dedicated professionals. However, their valuable insights are often overlooked, leading to reactive care and preventable crises. StartUp Health community members Christopher Jue and Thomas Moore, through CAREgivers Insight, are working to change that.

The Challenge: From Reactive Crisis to Proactive Care

Caregiving is one of the most demanding roles, yet it often goes unrecognized in the healthcare ecosystem. Whether you're caring for a parent with Alzheimer's, a spouse recovering from surgery, or any other loved one with chronic illness, the experience is filled with unpredictability. Traditional systems often rely on incomplete notes, manual logs, and reactive care that only addresses issues after they’ve escalated into emergencies.

This became clear to Christopher Jue when he found himself remotely managing his father’s care from 2,500 miles away. Despite having 24/7 caregivers, a distressing pattern emerged: four hospitalizations for dehydration in just two years. The existing system was fundamentally flawed. "Notes and logs were incomplete, inconsistent, and reactive," Christopher recalls. "We had no early warning system—only hindsight." What was missing? Real-time, actionable insights that could detect subtle changes in health before they became serious problems.

Furthermore, the lessons learned from these crises often remained siloed, failing to impact caregivers who weren't directly involved. The realization was stark: the very individuals closest to the patient, those with the most frequent and intimate observations, lacked the tools to effectively communicate and act on early signs of health decline.

This gap in care led the serial entrepreneur to imagine a solution that empowers caregivers with the tools they need to provide proactive care—improving quality of life for both patients and caregivers.

Origin Story: A Father's Struggle, a Son's Innovation

CAREgivers Insight wasn't born in a boardroom—it emerged from Christopher’s personal experience as a remote caregiver for his father, a pediatric cardiologist with Alzheimer’s. Despite having on-site caregivers, there was no effective communication or real-time tracking system. After his father’s fourth preventable hospitalization, Christopher reached a tipping point.

Driven by a desire to ensure his father's wellbeing, he collaborated with one of his father's caregivers, Thomas Moore. Together, they built a simple app to track health observations in real time, replacing subjective guesswork with actionable insights.

The app immediately proved successful—after its introduction, Christopher’s father never returned to the ER for dehydration. This success inspired him and Thomas to co-found CAREgivers Insight, with a mission to empower caregivers with tools that help detect, act on, and share early signs of health decline. The goal: fewer ER visits and less stress for everyone involved.

What sets CAREgivers Insight apart is its authenticity. The team blends caregiving experience with real-world testing, ensuring the platform meets the unique needs of caregivers while providing valuable insights for healthcare teams.

Under the Hood: A Health Detective for Caregivers

At its core, CAREgivers Insight is a health monitoring platform designed for caregivers, by caregivers. The app collects and tracks 68 different health metrics, ranging from vitals and mental health to medication adherence and physical condition. Unlike traditional tools that focus on periodic, reactive checks, CAREgivers Insight allows caregivers to monitor their loved one's health continuously and share that data with healthcare providers for better decision-making.

"It's like a health detective app. You answer simple questions about how someone feels or looks, and it turns them into graphs. If things are getting worse, you'll know early—and so will the people who help you," says Christopher. The system isn’t just about tracking vital signs like blood pressure; it also includes non-medical factors such as mood, cognitive changes, and behavioral signs that might indicate a deeper issue, like swallowing difficulties or mental agitation.

What truly sets CAREgivers Insight apart is the way it bridges gaps between caregiving and healthcare. Providers can access these trends remotely, which helps them make more informed decisions and avoid unnecessary visits by catching potential problems early. This leads to better care, fewer hospitalizations, and an overall healthier patient experience.

While the primary users are caregivers, occasionally patients themselves may contribute. Doctors, family members, and other providers will access trend dashboards through a web application, enabling them to monitor remotely and triage care needs.

What's Next: A Vision for a Proactive Future

Currently available on the App Store and Google Play, CAREgivers Insight is expanding its pilots and refining its platform. The next step is integrating AI to predict health declines before they escalate. Additionally, the company is in discussions with healthcare providers, payers, and institutions to scale the platform to larger populations.

Christopher and Thomas envision a future where caregivers are empowered with real-time data, reducing the burden on the healthcare system while improving patients’ quality of life. Widespread institutional adoption and the integration of AI will allow for personalized health insights and a proven model for caregiver-driven care. This shift will not only reduce healthcare costs but also improve the efficiency of healthcare teams by providing deeper insights into the needs of high-risk patients.

For example, imagine a patient with Alzheimer’s whose caregivers identify early symptoms of aspiration pneumonia. Using CAREgivers Insight, they can contact the doctor promptly, leading to early intervention and avoiding hospitalization. The app’s data could also suggest adjustments to the patient’s diet to reduce future risks.

In a world where caregivers are often overlooked, CAREgivers Insight is redefining their role. By transforming caregivers from passive support to active health monitors and care implementers, CAREgivers Insight is preventing emergencies before they happen—and ultimately improving the care of our most vulnerable populations.

With this approach, Christopher Jue and Thomas Moore believe that caregivers, often the linchpin of chronic care, are finally receiving the tools they’ve always needed to support those they care for. We are excited to welcome CAREgivers Insight into the StartUp Health community as they continue to innovate and grow. In Christopher’s wise words: “Working with like-minded founders, especially in healthcare, is so valuable. It's support. It's problem solving. It's coming up with new ideas. And there's the important question that I think good founding teams keep asking: What if?”
