StartUp Health Newsletter: What Does Your Digital Health Dust Say About You?

Brave New World of Health Data Poses New Questions and Opportunities

From apps for counting calories to devices for tracking steps, new digital tools can provide ever clearer pictures of our health. But while data collected by new health innovations has powerful implications for personalizing medicine, it also raises important questions about consumer privacy. A report released this week by the California HealthCare Foundation points out that as healthcare moves out of the hospital and into wearable devices and consumer tools, health data increasingly falls outside the protection of HIPAA. That means huge databases of consumer health information are free to travel between data brokers, employers, insurers and all kinds of third parties. But despite the privacy risks, the CHCF reports that many consumers are willing to share their data to improve their own health or achieve public health goals. And it highlights the opportunities for companies that offer personal health data lockers and other ways for consumers to securely store their health data.

StartUp Health Newsletter: Patients Worldwide Demand More From Digital Health Tools

Posted on 16th July, by Ki Mae Heussner in Blog Post. No Comments

McKinsey Survey of International Patients Debunks Five Myths About Digital Health

Across the globe, digital health tools are in demand! According to a new study from McKinsey, 75 percent of patients surveyed in the UK, Germany and Singapore want to use digital health services. Even better, it’s apparently not just millennials eager to try new technology. Patients over 50 years old reported nearly the same enthusiasm for new digital health services as their younger counterparts. But even though demand is strong, McKinsey says adoption is slow because existing solutions don’t meet patients’ needs or are low quality. For startups innovating in this space, that means new opportunities. Check out McKinsey’s report for more details or take a look at our midyear funding report to see which digital health sectors are growing fastest.

Study: Mobile Health Improves Engagement Among Medicaid Patients

A little text message-based encouragement can go a long way when it comes to patient adherence, according to the results of a new study from StartUp Health company Sense Health and Montefiore Medical Center. Interactive text messages that reminded Medicaid patients of upcoming appointments increased adherence by 40 percent. Patient motivation saw an upswing, too: patients using Sense Health’s technology were 26 percent more confident about tackling their health problems head on than those in the control group.

StartUp Health Newsletter: Patient Data Grabs the Spotlight on Capitol Hill

Posted on 25th June, by Ki Mae Heussner in Blog Post. No Comments

Digital Health Leaders and Lawmakers Discuss Data

The brave new world of digital health sure is keeping government regulators on their toes. Over the past few weeks, the FDA has offered up bits of clarity on how it views apps like Apple’s HealthKit, genetics startup 23andme and social media for drug and device makers. This week, the FDA and other government officials met with some of the biggest names in the industry – like 23andme’s Anne Wojcicki and Athenahealth‘s Jonathan Bush – to talk about the future of the sector and the role of regulation. Some of the biggest topics of discussion? Interoperability and patient data sharing. Given all the data collection revelations, privacy is clearly a major concern. But we’re excited about the potential for data to personalize, streamline and democratize healthcare.

StartUp Health Newsletter: Bad News Means Big Opportunity for Digital Health

Posted on 18th June, by Ki Mae Heussner in Blog Post. No Comments

Can Innovation Boost US Healthcare Out of Last Place?

The U.S. might be on the upswing in the World Cup arena, but not so much when it comes to the global health game. In a study released Monday by The Commonwealth Fund, the U.S. came in dead last on a list comparing the health systems of 11 industrialized countries. And it’s the fifth time in a decade that the U.S. has ranked so poorly. So, how do we reverse our losing streak? We think digital health innovation led by an army of entrepreneurs has a huge role to play. The first half of 2014 has already witnessed major advancements in the industry, from data releases to increased venture deals. And we still have yet to see what the rest of the year (including the Apple-Google-Samsung health battle!) will bring.

A Fresh Perspective on Health Spending

Each year, $2.7 trillion is spent on medical care in the U.S., but where does it all go? On June 25 & 26, the SOCAP Health conference in New York will convene stakeholders from across the industry to explore new opportunities for impact and entrepreneurship. To join the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the NY Academy of Medicine and other leaders, use our code N_STARTUP for 30 percent off tickets.

StartUp Health Newsletter: Can Google Break Down the ‘Data Barriers’ Surrounding Autism?

Posted on 11th June, by Ki Mae Heussner in Blog Post. No Comments

Google Builds Database to Unlock Mysteries of Autism

Since its unveiling in February, Google’s genomics effort has been relatively quiet. But this week the tech giant shared its first big genomics goal: to build a massive digital genome database with the non-profit Autism Speaks. Genomics has been a booming area in digital health, with the rise of startups like 23andMe and StartUp Health company Gene by Gene. Autism, which affects one in 68 children, has also been the target of new innovation. Our portfolio company ABPathfinder, for example, develops software for autism therapy and SynapDx has raised venture funding for a blood test for autism. The goal of this latest project is to knock down the “data barriers” surrounding autism and we hope we begin to see more programs of its kind.

Cleveland Clinic Is on the Hunt for the Next Wave of Healthcare Disrupters

Send in your video submissions by June 15 for the chance to pitch your ideas to investors and industry leaders at Cleveland Clinic’s annual Medical Innovation Summit in October. One startup will even have the opportunity to showcase its technology to a select group of the hospital’s caregivers.

Preview the Next Big Digital Health Pilots

Pilot Health Tech NYC will announce its 2014 winners during its Pilot Day on June 26! The competition, which awards $1M in total funding, matches early-stage health tech startups and leading NYC providers dedicated to improving care and reducing costs. Last year’s winners included StartUp Health companies AdhereTech and Sense Health, so we can’t wait to see what 2014 brings!

StartUp Health Newsletter: Digital Health Goes to the White House

Posted on 4th June, by Ki Mae Heussner in Blog Post. No Comments

What a week for digital health! On Monday, the biggest tech company in the world — Apple —  made its first (long-anticipated) step into health tech with the announcement of HealthKit in San Francisco. Meanwhile, back East, more than 2,000 government officials, entrepreneurs, investors and experts gathered in Washington, DC, for the fifth Health Datapalooza to improve ways health data can transform healthcare.

We also made news of our own this week, with the addition of eight new companies to our academy! Three years after the launch of our platform, our portfolio has grown to include 71 companies, 40 of which took the stage at our startup showcase at Health Datapalooza to demo for hundreds of investors, customers and strategic partners.

To help us celebrate our growing family of companies — and our third anniversary! — two of our biggest supporters joined us for the event. Our Chairman Jerry Levin kicked off the showcase and Steve Case, founder of AOL and Chairman of Revolution (and a StartUp Health investor), sat down with our CEO Steve Krein for a fireside chat about why health tech entrepreneurs should band together to reimagine healthcare.

We were also honored that legendary technologist and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla participated in our quarterly Healthcare Transformer Summit and offered his thoughts and advice on building the future of healthcare.

The cherry on top of a banner week for StartUp Health companies? A working visit to the White House, where more than 60 of our Healthcare Transformers met with senior health policy officials to focus on transforming healthcare.

Don’t Forget! July 1 Is the Next Deadline to Apply to StartUp Health Academy

We’re on a mission to find our next class of Healthcare Transformers! Find out more about StartUp Health Academy and apply by July 1.

GE Ventures & Drive Capital Back Aver Informatics to Lower Healthcare Costs

What does it mean to provide value-based healthcare while managing costs? Aver Informatics knows. The Green Bay, Wisc.-based company, which is part of the StartUp Health and GE entrepreneurship program, uses health data to simplify the reimbursement process and lower costs for payors. Since launching three years ago, Aver has helped its customers save 10 to 15 percent on payments for treatments across their patient populations. This week, it announced that it has raised $8.5 million from GE Ventures and Drive Capital. We’re thrilled to see Aver’s rapid traction and we’re excited about what it could mean for the system.

StartUp Health Returns to Health Datapalooza for Our Third Anniversary

Three years ago, StartUp Health launched on stage at Health Datapalooza with the mission of helping build and scale a legion of companies focused on reimagining healthcare. Next week, we’ll return to Washington, DC, to showcase 40 of our 70 companies, introduce eight new startups and celebrate their collective innovation. Additionally, four of our companies — Maxwell Health, 1EQ, @PointofCare and Pocket Anatomy — will take the main stage to demo their solutions.

If you’re a payor, provider or investor committed to supporting the startup ecosystem and would like access to our StartUp Health Showcase in DC on June 2, email us your name, company and title today! (Note: We will do our best to accommodate you, but may be limited by space considerations).
