Did You Get Your Google Glass?

For one day only this week, you could have snagged your very own pair of Google Glass — if you were willing to shell out a cool $1,500. While the jury is still out on the practicality of Glass for general consumer use, we’re looking forward to seeing what it can do in healthcare. No word yet on how many devices Google sold during its 24-hour sale, but here’s hoping we get to see how it fares in the doctor’s office soon!

Reimagining Healthcare

Eye-scanning apps that could prevent blindness. Online communities committed to ending ALS and building a global network of blood donors. Technology that aims to someday extend human life. At our Healthcare Reimagined event yesterday, held in partnership with Google, those were just a few of the ways some of technology’s biggest companies said they’re building the future of health. (In addition to hearing what Google, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo are doing in health, 43 StartUp Health companies shared their visions, too – more on that below!) Day in and day out, innovating in healthcare often means focusing on the details that need to be changed (and there are so many!). But against the backdrop of “moonshot”-thinking at Google, yesterday was a nice reminder for entrepreneurs to take the long view and dream big.

Meet the Newest Members of the Family

This week, we also welcomed 16 new companies to the StartUp Health Academy! They join from across the U.S. and from around the world, including from India, Ireland and Canada – you can see the full list here. Additionally, we announced that Nadeem Kassam, the founder of BASIS Science and a member of StartUp Health’s inaugural class, will become StartUp Health’s first “Healthcare Transformer in Residence.”

Visualizing the Digital Health Revolution

Want a quick snapshot of the digital health revolution? Paul Sonnier, the driving force behind the the largest #DigitalHealth Linkedin Group, created an interesting infographic with Misfit Wearables that gives a visual overview of momentum in the field.

With 16 New Companies, StartUp Health Spans 7 Countries and More Than 30 Cities

Posted on 8th April, by Nicole Kinsey in Blog Post. No Comments

BASIS Science Founder Nadeem Kassam Joins StartUp Health
as First ‘Healthcare Transformer in Residence’

New York, NY – April 8, 2014StartUp Health, a global startup platform accelerating innovation in health and wellness, today announced the addition of 16 new companies to its StartUp Health Academy, a long-term entrepreneurship program and community designed to help scale early-stage digital health companies. To date, 63 companies have joined StartUp Health, three of which have been acquired, and the program’s portfolio has raised a total of $130 million.

Thousands of startups that share a common goal of transforming health and wellness have applied to the StartUp Health Academy. Each quarter, it invites fewer than 20 companies to join its comprehensive three-year entrepreneurship program. These companies are led by some of the best and brightest serial entrepreneurs, doctors, technologists and trained scientists. Selected companies become part of a close community of “Healthcare Transformers” and participate in a long-term coaching program focused on scaling their businesses, leadership development and providing access to investors, customers, talent and partners who are committed to healthcare innovation.

“We are entering a great period of transformation, where all aspects of our health and wellness are being reimagined by inspiring and passionate entrepreneurs from around the world,” said Jerry Levin, Chairman of StartUp Health. “StartUp Health’s growing family of Healthcare Transformers represents the beginning of what’s possible when entrepreneurs lead the way and it signals the remarkable potential for cross-pollination between innovators in different countries.”

Today, StartUp Health also announced that Nadeem Kassam, a member of StartUp Health’s inaugural class and the founder of BASIS Science, which was recently acquired by Intel, will join StartUp Health as its first “Healthcare Transformer in Residence.” His focus will be helping the current community of StartUp Health companies and scouting the ecosystem for new startups.

“To be surrounded by such an extraordinary network of entrepreneurs and innovators and have an ongoing support infrastructure to navigate challenges has been invaluable. I am honored to coach this amazing group of Healthcare Transformers and help StartUp Health continue to find the next generation of innovators,” Kassam said.

This week, StartUp Health will host its quarterly Healthcare Transformer Summit in New York City and showcase its companies to some of the tech industry’s biggest brands, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo!, as well as nearly 300 health-focused investors, healthcare brands and strategic partners.

Obamacare Crosses the Finish Line With 7M Signups

The final tally is in: Thanks to thousands of events, hundreds of interviews, an army of celebrity tweeters and — don’t forget! — one "Galifinakis bump," the White House said Tuesday that 7.1 million people signed up for insurance under the new healthcare law.  That’s a huge victory for President Obama, especially considering the rocky rollout of Healthcare.gov back in October. And for healthcare startups? That’s 7 million more reasons why digital health innovation matters.

Sense Health Helps Hospitals Target Chronic Disease Patients

New York's Montefiore Medical Center, one of the "most wired" hospitals in the country, is now testing text messages and wearable monitors as ways to help diabetic teens keep their condition in check. Preliminary results from a mobile tech pilot with StartUp Health company Sense Health show that patients are providing positive feedback. This week, Sense Health also announced a partnership with The Greater Buffalo United Accountable Healthcare Network to reach Medicaid patients with text-based support.

What’s the Secret Behind Healthcare Investing’s ‘Billion-Dollar Man’?

Castlight Health’s blockbuster IPO last week put a big spotlight on the investment potential in digital health. But one investor in particular is already well aware of opportunities in the sector. Castlight co-founder and Venrock partner Bryan Roberts has been behind not one, but six $1 billion+ companies. His secret? Not staying married to any model set. Oh, and this: “I operate with a very healthy dose of paranoia.”

StartUp Health Newsletter: Digital Health Lights Up SXSW Interactive

Health Geeks Snag the Spotlight at SXSW

From taking home top honors in startup competitions to packing exhibition halls for keynote speeches, digital health entrepreneurs generated a ton of buzz at this year’s SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin. We were excited to partner with Google for our third annual Social Health Bootcamp and we joined Pulse + Signal founder Andre Blackman, Dr. Ivor Horn from the Children's National Medical Center, Damon Davis from the Dept. of Health and Human Services and other great health leaders for a workshop on bringing better care to underserved communities. Each day, dozens of panels and events covered wearables, data control, and privacy, among other emerging topics in health and wellness.

StartUp Health would like to invite you to join us at Digital Health Innovation in Context, a one-day conference presented by TigerLabs, to be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the Westin Forrestal Village in Princeton, NJ. The intimate conference setting will focus on the world of digital health: strategy, opportunities, and innovation.

The roster of healthcare executives, entrepreneurs, and investors will not only expose you to the ideas shaping the digital health landscape, but provide you with the opportunity to meet the people reshaping the healthcare landscape. Speakers include StartUp Health Co-founder and President Unity Stoakes and Healthcare Transformer Nadeem Kassam, Founder of Basis.

The panel conversations will generate a diverse discussion to tackle recurring questions: How both the corporate and the technology startups can work more effectively together? How can large corporations create a mentality of innovation, rapid development, and iteration? How to structure, form, and execute investment groups?

Discounted Price for the StartUp Health Community
Register now with the code DHIC100 for a $150 ticket (regularly $250).

If you have questions about the conference, please contact the event organizer James Smits.
